Fact: I love list-making and planning. Also fact: I am a perfectionist. Why am I sharing this with you? Well, I wanted to paint a clear picture of why I even bothered trying out the Bullet Journal instead of all the pre-made options out there. I am also willing to bet that many of you are in the same boat as me when it comes to organizing your thoughts and agendas in a way that makes the most sense for you.
I have purchased my fair share of planners over the years. I've gone with the efficient and business-like ones from Office Depot; I've purchased the cute and stylish ones from Target. I've even explored Etsy and other online retailers for planners that are tailor-made for my needs. Even still, I've never once found one that I stuck with for more than 6 months.
The reason: my needs change, often. From college and part-time jobs, to teaching and coaching full-time, to staying at home with my daughter, I've had a lot of different ways I've needed to organize my life. It seemed impossible for me to find a planner that could flow with these changes without me just up and buying a new one.
Well, I guess I've done the impossible! I've finally found a system that is working for me and it helps me keep track of (almost) EVERYTHING in just ONE vessel. And when my needs change, guess what? This method will still work!
It's called a Bullet Journal and I am smitten. Here's the crazy part: it's just a blank journal! You create what you need from it and voila! It's 100% perfect for you and your needs. It's such a simple idea that I feel foolish for all the money and time wasted on other organizers.
Now, I have only been using this for one month, so I am still working out several kinks in the process. I don't have a solid system down yet, but I am having so much fun and freedom with it that I know it's going to be a long-term investment.
Below I will share a mini tour of my own journal, how I am specifically using it to organize my life, what I am loving about it, what I am struggling with, and my overall recommendations for using a Bullet Journal of your very own!
Tour of My Journal
I have created the following pages for my own personal journal, but the options out there are endless! (bold are pictured):
What I am Loving
I am loving so many things about the Bullet Journal that listing it will take up less of your time than me writing a novel!
What I am Struggling With
I mentioned earlier that I am a perfectionist, which has played a role in my many previous failed attempts at keeping up with a planner system for an extended period of time. The Bullet Journal allows me more freedom, yes, but since I am not artistic in the least bit (my architect brother took all those genes - thanks bro!), I struggle with making my pages look exactly how I see them in my head. It's a struggle I am overcoming, though, by focusing on making my Bullet Journal not just about aesthetics but about efficiency and de-cluttering my mind for a more organized and purposeful life!
My Recommendations for Using a Bullet Journal
While I am still a novice at this, I have picked up a few things that make this system even more effective than it already is. Here they are:
Have I convinced you to give this system a shot? Maybe, maybe not, but if you are even the least bit curious, I implore you to give it a try! Best case scenario: you fall in love with it and have a much more organized and purposeful life. Worst case: you now have a sketch book and some markers to mess around with or give to your kids. Either way, it's not much risk and it can be so rewarding!
I'll keep you guys updated as I get better at this whole Bullet Journal system and find even more reasons to love it. Also, be sure to stay tuned for a separate post on my daily habit tracker - habits I'm tracking, why tracking them is important, what mine looks like, and the lesson I'm learning along the way!
